As recently reported in our series covering Bartlesville’s fight against public indecency, LGBT activists are using a bogus protective order against a street preacher, as granted by the Washington County District Court, to silence opposition to public drag shows in the presence of children.
Street preacher Richard Penkoski of Warriors for Christ ministries has appealed the 5-year PPO and extensive gag order against him to the Oklahoma State Supreme Court. The Rutherford Institute, one of the nation’s leading defenders of First Amendment liberties, has stepped in to provide legal services on behalf of Penkoski. The Rutherford Institiute is partnering with Tulsa attorneys Joe M. Fears and Richard D. White, Jr. of Barber & Bartz law firm to represent Penkoski, releasing the following statement about the case:
With much at stake, including the rights of all Oklahomans to speak and worship freely, The V1SUT Vantage will be following this case closely.
Thank you for staying on this issue. It may be happening in a town other than our own, but religious intolerance and child pornography will come directly to our doorstep if we allow this to continue unabated.
It's encouraging that a nationally-known entity is taking on this case to help the Christian side. Hopefully the OSSC has strong enough conservatives to do the right thing here. And hopefully Rutherford can help focus this case as a matter of misrepresentation/non-representation (i.e. threat) to the city leadership, to the extent that a remedy can be served to the Christians seeking justice and as fair a representation in their city leadership as a fractional group gets.
